a/PART Series No. 1
This ongoing series of work comes about as a response to my musings on belonging, sense of place and how one forms identity. Jewellery is often worn as a signifier of how we see ourselves belonging to a place or time, has memory or sentiment deeply attached to it and is a vehicle for personal expression. These particular works are intended as a statement about the dichotomy in contemporary human identity that points to a deep, innate desire to a part of nature, yet a vast separation and being very apart from it.
Other ideas that weave their way out of my hands and into this work includes the commodification of nature at the hands of development and commerce, due to our collective separation from it. This in turn has it’s part in the housing crisis that can be observed happening all over the world. Additionally these works raise questions around the sustainability of my trade (jewellery design + production) and its impact on the environment. The ephemeral nature of these works is an intentional contrast to the 'forever-ness' of standard jewellery items.
